The treasure hunt is on for 2 million dollars of buried treasure. Forrest Fenn, a multi-millionaire art collector was diagnosed with cancer and decided to create a treasure hunt for 2 million dollars worth of gold coins and assorted other treasure. The buried treasure (okay, it might not be buried – here are 10 tips from Forrest that negate certain assumptions!) is located somewhere in the mountains of New Mexico (maybe…it is somewhere in the Rocky Mts.). And, although the 82-year-old Fenn has now recovered from the cancer, the treasure hunt is still on!
Fenn wrote a book called the Thrill of the Chase and in it a poem of the same name gives nine clues to where the treasure may be buried. Here is a poem from that book that gives those 9 clues:
Here is the poem from “The Thrill of the Chase,” Fenn’s self-published autobiography:
As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.
Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.
From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is drawing ever nigh;
There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.
If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.
So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answers I already know
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak
So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.
And, on March 1, 2013, Fenn revealed a 10th clue on the Today Show. In that show he revealed that the treasure was hidden higher than 5,000 feet above sea level. Up for a treasure hunt?
